Love in your Wake

Love in your wake

“You leave love in your wake
With every step that you take
It’s what you do and what you say,
You leave love in your wake.”
Amy Carol Webb – Scatter Seeds

There are songs which either elucidate a vow I’m ready to take, or illuminate a vow already taken. Mostly these are songs whose melody and lyrics touch something deep within me, pulling forward into consciousness a personal, spiritual goal as evidenced by a change in character precipitated by a life-long, on-going practice.

“Love in your Wake” is one such song.

My dear friend Elizabeth, sent me a copy of this song, saying it reminded her of me when she heard it. A truly beautiful gift. Upon hearing the song, I immediately made a vow to myself to become the person she saw me as: someone who left love in her wake.

I wish there was some way you could hear this song**. I often hear it in my head when I need a reminder of who I have become, and am becoming, especially in these day of such dissolution of the world in which I grew up. It is almost like a mantra in that it refocuses my attention, and therefore my practice.

Today, I can say, with some degree of certainty, that, for the most part, I do, indeed, leave love in my wake. If you have a hard time with the word “love”, kindness is a good and accurate substitute: We all can learn to leave kindness in our wake in how we respond, treat, and think about those who are in front of us each day. The gift to me is that I can feel and see the impact of kindness on those with whom I interact on a daily basis.

I practice kindness, which I see as “steadfast love”. (As a Taurus-type person, “steadfast” is much preferred to “stubborn” or “persistent”.) Steadfast is not only the experience of love and kindness, it is the daily practice which leaves love in its wake.

I can think of no better inheritance to the world than the echos of uncompromising love and steadfast kindness whereever I’ve passed. Thank you for being part of a wondrous cadre of people who also do, indeed, leave love in their wake.
